On July 30, 2018, documentarian Alexander Rastorguev was killed in the Central African Republic. He left a unique mark on Russian cinema, but managed to do much less than he could. "Rastorguev" is a portrait of one of the brightest and freest filmmakers of our time; direct speech and fragments of films that form a single statement about the meaning of art, homeland and pain.

The film shows the story happened with Leningrad in the World War 2 - the Siege of Leningrad which lasted for three years. The Siege - is one of the symbols of the human’s fortitude, but from the other hand is also a vivid example of the human’s cruelty. By the instrument of the storytelling the film authors chose the wartime chronicles of the both Russian and German records, as well as the reports of the city radio, music of those times and the sounds which surrounded the citizens in times of the siege. Ruthless chronicle records help us better to understand the torment people had to undergo during that horrible wartime. Is it possible to heal the pain caused? How not to repeat the tragedy again?

Under the guidance of architect Renzo Piano, the historic building of the HPP-2 power plant on Bolotnaya Embankment is being transformed into a cultural site. The film is a kaleidoscope of narratively unrelated scenes, united by a reflection on how art invades and influences our lives. The lifting of the air ducts is the same performance as the dropping of the inflatable scenery in the GES-2 Opera performance, and the planting of the forest is an act of actionism extended over two seasons, not inferior in its meditativeness and recurrence to the performance “Sorrow will conquer happiness”.

The film is about the long-term relationship between the director and the character of her first film, the French indie artist, musician and director Siegfried, known as Sig. The story is dedicated to the experience of growing up, emancipation and finding their own identity in life and in art. The film raises questions about the nature of the student-teacher relationship, which inevitably involves submission and conflict, and the nature of the director and hero relationship, which is based on love and a little manipulation.

By the beginning of the war in Chechnya, the legendary Major Izmailov worked in the military registration and enlistment office of the city of Zhukovsky. Having buried the first conscript who died during the storming of Grozny, he refused to send 18-year-old children to death and went to Chechnya himself to take out the prisoners. And he freed at least 174 people. The film uses a rare chronicle of the Chechen wars from the private archives of mothers who were looking for their sons in Chechnya, as well as negotiating officers from the working group on the exchange of prisoners. For the first time, the heroes of the film tell in detail what they had to go to to free people from captivity on both sides.

Ivanna is a young Nenets woman and mother of five, living in the Russian Arctic. Like her family for centuries before, she has led a traditional nomadic life in the tundra, driving a herd of reindeer. Most of them die, and she knows she will soon be left without a livelihood and be forced to make a dramatic decision. The film is about four years of a Nenets family from the harsh life in the tundra to modern everyday life in the Siberian city of Dudinka. It is both a liberating drama and a melancholy requiem for a lost way of life.

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov lived under six rulers of the Soviet state. With five of them, Beria (read Stalin), Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Andropov and Gorbachev, he met personally and hoped that in one way or another he would be able to influence their decisions. But he had a real impact on the society of his country. He was born under Lenin and died under Gorbachev, a year and a half before the day when the state collapsed, the strengthening of which he contributed to in the first half of his life and which he fought in the second. This "turn", as he himself called it, is the most interesting thing in Sakharov's history.

On December 23, 2020, the smelting shop in the village of Nikel carried out the last melting and was stopped forever. The workshop began to be built back in the 30s, when this territory belonged to Finland, and the village was then called Kolosjoki. At the end of World War II, when the territory was ceded to the Soviet Union, the destroyed plant was restored, and the village was named Nikel. It is located west of Murmansk, a few kilometers from the Norwegian border. In the 1980s, the plant emitted about 400 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide into the air per year, and in 1990 an environmental campaign was even launched in Norway to Stop the Soviet Death Clouds. The Norilsk Nickel company, which took over the mining and metallurgical plant in Nikel in the 1990s, initially agreed with Norway on the modernization of enterprises on the Kola Peninsula, but then abandoned the program. In the end, Norilsk Nickel, the largest supplier of non-ferrous metals to the world market, decided to close the smelter on the border with Norway, promising workers social guarantees, transfer to other company enterprises, retraining, pensions, and a small business development program for the village and, for example, industrial tourism.

Official image 1930-1950 is replaced by the memories of fellow villagers and relatives, and the view from the researcher's office is replaced by what the official memory of the storyteller looks like today. In the 60s of the last century, Soviet archaeologists discovered a center of Paleolithic culture in the Southern Urals. The rock paintings of the Kapova Cave have become a sensation in the world of science. There are very few places where evidence of the life and work of ancient people has been preserved. Thanks to the lighting equipment of the film crew of the popular science film, many new drawings were discovered at that time. And now, 50 years later, modern documentary filmmakers, together with the head of research, associate professor of Moscow State University, Doctor of Science Vladislav Zhitenev, are making new discoveries, and in the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater, young choreographer Rinat Abushakhmanov and composer Nikolai Popov are creating a unique production, a one-act popular science ballet "On what are the stones silent about" according to real research by archaeologists.

A film director arrives at a maximum-security penal colony to shoot a documentary about a squad leader who works with prisoners. The manager however, believes that it is not worth showing the daily life of the colony as it actually is and proceeds to shoot staged scenes, which he directs himself. The author of the film patiently records how this movie is shot, but real life still manages to break into the production.

The film from a correctional colony explores the theme of self-awareness of a person in captivity. The director shows the prison from an unexpected angle. This is a hypnotizing, oneiric vision. There is no moralizing here. The author is interested in a person and the most precious thing he has - his dreams and his reality. The film contains documentary footage from a correctional colony (a plastic recycling workshop and a residential block), mounted with a monologue of a prisoner in order to understand what is happening with human reality on the other side of the fence.

Choreography of everyday life in a small village in Belarus. With the help of static shots and associative montage, "Khan's Body" broadcasts a look at the common life of people, permeated with invisible relations of power. The villagers move and position their bodies according to the situation and their social and professional position. Khan's Body traces intertwined social structures and recontextualizes them through montage. The stage nature of the film frames reveals the surreal theatricality of the institutionalized everyday life.
