This story is about the Russian North. The research undertaken by the author began with the villages in the Arkhangelsk region, near the White Sea, where his family comes from and where he spent his childhood. A significant part of the villages is remote from cities and often has no connection with them, except for air transport.

Anatoli and Svetlana live since two years under shelling in their village Pesky, located beside Donetsk Airport. They live partly underground inside their basement, which they transformed into a living place. Water, gas and electricity connections are destroyed. The Ukrainian army helps them food supplies. The water well in the garden provides them rain water. Anatoli has been a beekeeper during all his life. The honey bees became part of his life. He feels a deep love and responsibility for them. Abandoning them in the war was no option for him. The elderly couple refused to be evacuated from Pesky, despite the daily non- stop bombing and fighting.

Sukhum is the capital of Abkhazia, a tiny, unrecognized republic on the shores of the Black Sea. On its highest hill lies a medical institute of research on monkeys, established by the Soviets in the 1920’s. The legend states it was meant to create a hybrid between man and ape. This creature never came to life, neither the communist New Man did. Today, men and monkeys are caged in a territory ravaged by war and decades of cruelty, both victims of a failed series of experiments.
