In UKRAINIAN SHERIFFS we follow Viktor and Volodya, two men who have been appointed local sheriffs by the mayor in the town of Stara Zburyevka, Ukraine. While dealing with crimes such as stolen ducks and drunken neighbors, the news about the war is slowly creeping in on them through their televisions and the invitations to join the army. UKRAINIAN SHERIFFS gives us look beyond the war and inside everyday life in a Ukrainian village, with a great eye for the shady side of life.

Not everyone dares to sit in front of the camera like that and talk about love, resentment, disappointment, the tragedy of a breakup. But the heroines of the film decided to “undress” in front of the camera. And not only in the figurative sense of the word.

More than a quarter of a century has passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union. We still feel the contradictory echoes of this process and, probably, we will feel it for a long time to come. There is little left that still unites the former citizens of the former empire. And this is not least Soviet food, an absolutely unique socio-cultural phenomenon of Soviet history and Soviet life.

Oleg and Andrey are truck drivers who have spent most of their lives driving large trucks. After many years of working around the clock, they managed to build a business and solve material problems. They could do what they love and adequately provide for their families. When in November 2015 tolls were introduced in Russia on all federal highways for heavy trucks, the life of drivers changed dramatically. The charging system was called “Platon” (“fee per ton”). Late at night, Andrei and Oleg, along with other truckers, left St. Petersburg for Moscow to cancel this system.

“I have been working hard this summer. Begged for alms, collected metal, stole. I don't have a father. The mother was asleep. I left home and started living on the street. In the basement. I have friends. We live together, steal, sniff glue, drink vodka. Then they got hooked on the needle. Now we all walk badly and hardly talk. We are sick bitch people. And you?" Film-immersion. For several months, the filmmakers lived with a pack of homeless human children and observed different aspects of their lives.

Ulyana's mother is a drug addict, and her grandmother is an alcoholic. And that is why the holy sisters from the Community of New Holy Martyrs, where they sheltered and educate Ulyana, consider her to be genetically corrupted and spiritually deceived. But thanks to the film, we will be able to get to know this unique 9-year-old personality, before whom all pedagogical laws fade and even Benjamin's mother herself, a former teacher, and now an Orthodox orphan educator, is lost.

This film is dedicated to the people who made a huge contribution to the development of Siberian documentary cinema, the Khalin spouses. Director Maria Halina and her husband, cameraman Valery Khalin live happily at times, sometimes not so much. But behind everyday life lies a completely different life, full of passions, revelations, disappointments, declarations of love.

The film is about that very morning when the whole of Ukraine woke up to the howling of sirens and explosions of Russian missiles. The movie unfolds between movement and stillness, peace and war, and ultimately between life and death. It is an attempt to convey the feeling of disintegration of reality that people experience when they find themselves in the epicenter of one of the most frustrating and catastrophic situations. It is about the sense of loss that Ukrainians are experiencing in one way or another during this war.

Pensioner Lyudmila preaches the Word of God. Only subtle visual parallels connect the heroines of the film. They are somewhat similar to each other. An action begun by one seems to be completed by another. Step by step, from dawn to dusk, from youth to old age. And a lived day turns into a lived life.

The village of Gorelovka is located in Southern Georgia. It was founded in the mid 19th century by Doukhobors (“spirit-wrestlers”), members a group of Russian religious dissidents banished from Russia by Tsar Nicholas I for their anarchist and pacifist beliefs. The Doukhobors managed to keep their identity and traditions throughout the Soviet period. However, under political and economical pressure, many of them have now left Georgia and their heritage is disappearing with the last inhabitants. Leo Tolstoy was interested in their non-violent outlook and supported them in several occasions.

The authors of the film-investigation set a goal to find out the true reasons for the murder of the legendary hero of the Civil War Grigory Kotovsky. For many years, well-known historians and descendants of the red general have been trying to understand who benefited from Kotovsky's death, which was always presented solely as a result of a domestic conflict? The general was killed in 1925, allegedly at a friendly party. He was shot not just by a comrade-in-arms, but by a man who owes a lot to him. Perhaps the origins of the tragedy should be sought in the criminal past of Kotovsky himself. On the other hand, the killer could have been pushed to this step by those who were directly interested in eliminating the popular but absolutely uncontrollable hero of the Civil War from political life.
