What does it mean to be a student and at the same time a conductor? How to deal with the organisation problems and a hostile orchestra that doesn’t want to collaborate? How to get through all of this without lowering the artistic standards your master has been trying to pass on you for many years? A film not just about the personal story, but about the process of academic artistic education in general. There is “no royal way to learn geometry” and neither is there one in Arts.

"David" is the story of a Jewish boy from Minsk, David Levin, who went through the pressure of the state machines of fascist Germany, the Soviet Union, England, France, even Israel and did not break, but retained his philanthropy, kindness to the world.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and activist Sasha Kolchenko were both detained in occupied Crimea on May 10, 2014. They were accused of plotting terrorist acts, taken to Russia and convicted. Kolchenko was sentenced to 10 years in prison and Sentsov – 20. Sentsov and Kolchenko were first held in a detention center in Moscow, tried in Rostov, transported to the Urals and then to the Russian Arctic. Between the two of them, they have covered almost 20,000 kilometers, or, half the distance around the Earth. Their entire journey has been within Russia. Or actually, within its prison system. We traveled to the key sites along their transport route – where the Ukrainian consuls were denied access and where lawyers today face difficulties getting in – to find out in what conditions they are being kept and who is responsible for their fate.

A Beautiful Tragedy is a character driven documentary film about 15 year old Oksana Skorik, at the Perm State Ballet School, who follows her mother’s dream to see her become a prima ballerina. Russian classical ballet is exceptional. It has glorious traditions, and is a distinct part of Russian self consciousness. The popular engagement is huge, and dance is taken to higher levels of perfection than anywhere else. The Perms Order of Honour Choreographic School lies far east in Russia, close to Siberia, and is one of the most renowned schools in the world. Of five hundred children selected for the annual audition at the school, only 30 are accepted. To get a place in the school the body has to be perfect: each part of the body is given marks, 5 is perfection. Then they look to see how supple the girls are, stretching their small bodies in every direction. Most of the girls spend 9 years at this school, sacrificing their youth and suffering unbearable pain – only to realize that their dream will not come true. Their ultimate goal could crash at any given moment. Oksana Skorik - the main character of the film - is the new Prima Ballerina at Meriinsky theatre in St Petersburg, and the new Russian star. Thousands of young boys, living on the edge of society, are fighting to survive from one week to the next. The film relates the story of a girl in love with a boy who is convicted for murder. They are writing love letters. She is trying to make him a better human, to prepare him for a new life outside the walls. But his fellow prisoners are teenage murderers and rapists, and their influence on him is devastating. The film is about hope, love and young men that have become totally brutalized. Will our young man end up as the others, or is there a possibility that Ira can save him with her love? The shooting of this documentary film began a long time ago, during the life of Viktor Tsoi, but fate decreed in its own way. The film ended without him.

Director Roman Viktyuk is either hated or adored. But everyone recognizes the originality and uniqueness of his work. The film by Alexei Uchitel is a series of illustrations about the life of the scandalous maestro. Unique footage from rehearsals, a trip to Lviv and New York, young actors who have now become stars, but were once discovered by Viktyuk, as well as scenes from the director's most striking and challenging performances. And, of course, Roman Viktyuk himself, ironic, funny, sincere.

This story is about a strong bond between man and nature, which started from childhood of our hero, who has learned the work of forest keeper from his father. Onik is always in a struggle with illegal tree cutters and whenever he doesn’t manage to prevent the cutting he falls into depression. There were many efforts to bribe him, or to pressure with the local mentality on his family members, other forest keepers were beaten, but Onik is firm in his principles. He considers himself Man of Nature.

More recently, Palekh was known on a global scale. Now it is rare if a modern resident of Russia remembers at least in which region of his country Palekh is located. How did it happen? Does the city with the highest density of artists per square meter deserve to be forgotten? And by the way, is it even a city? The heroes of the film are two local residents who will talk about their understanding of the Russian hinterland and the creative atmosphere that has not yet left Palekh.
