PALACE FOR THE PEOPLE tells the stories of the most emblematic five buildings of socialist times - highly representative for the epoch and witnessing the historical turbulence in Eastern Europe in the second half of the XX century. The National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Moscow State University, Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, Palace of the Republic in Berlin are unique architectural creatures made with a lot of courage and a bit of lunacy to remind the people there was an ultimate power and brighter future. Each one is the tallest, the largest, has the biggest clock on Earth, or the most advanced technology of its time. They were the most grandiose enterprises in a time when collective good was the major state policy. Now that socialism is over it's time to go back and reveal their hidden secrets. The film takes a snapshot of the palaces today, as seen through the eyes of people related to them - their architects, former and current directors, ordinary people who worked in them.

A surfeit of bile, said the ancient Greek physicians, can lead both to physical disorders (gallstones) and mental health problems (melancholy). Ira A. Goryainova, the director of this intimate essay on the human body, health, disease and death, can vouch for this from personal experience. The leitmotif is her search for the cause of her own health problems—she probes deeply, sometimes quite literally—and the history of her mother, who died of cancer, seen through family home videos in post-Soviet Russia. Using historical archive footage and philosophical reflections, Goryainova shows how in different cultures and eras people have looked—or avoided looking—at the human body, health and disease. With self-knowledge, frankness and curiosity, the filmmaker explores how we can learn to view ourselves and our diseases—including diseases in our societies, such as fascism, the cancer of the 20th century.

In October 1947, the "Black Book" was to be published in Moscow - a collection of testimonies and articles about the murder of two million and seven hundred thousand Jews under Nazi occupation in the Soviet Union. The book was shelved by the authorities. The Holocaust of Soviet Jews as if it had never occurred at all. Why did Stalin decide to hide the solid and documented evidence of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union? Did Soviet Jewry’s enthusiasm on the establishment of the State of Israel cause collective punishment against them by the government? Since the revolution, Soviet Jews had been considered loyal partners in the building and administration of the Soviet Union. Why and how did they became suspects of dual loyalty, potential traitors, second class citizens?

The film shows how the famous Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov reflects the events taking place in Russia in his works. We will see his entire creative path from the first successes in the theater to feature films. We will see that the rise and fall of the director's star is also a reflection of Russian cultural politics, from a brief flowering of artistic freedom under Medvedev to a conservative culture backed by authoritarian measures.

What do escalators in Medellín, Arabic lettering in Amman, story-telling furniture from London, urban farming in Detroit and a co-living complex in Tokyo have to do with the Bauhaus? The architect Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919. He brought together some of the most illustrious artists in Europe to create a school that would fuse the fine arts and the crafts. Together, they set out to fundamentally rethink the world and society. Although the Bauhaus school – which later relocated to Dessau and then to Berlin – only existed for a few years, it revolutionized ideas about the organization of modern life. In 2019, the Bauhaus will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding. To mark the occasion, planetfilm has produced a documentary for Deutsche Welle. The film focusses on the influence that the philosophy of the Bauhaus movement still exerts on the globalized society of the 21st century. It also explores historical parallels between 1919 and the present day: Society is facing major upheavals and challenges, just as it did back then. Filmmakers meet architects, urban planners, designers and artists from around the globe who, in the spirit of the Bauhaus, want to rethink and change the world.
