The "Frankoni" Tent Circus has been touring the cities of the Rostov region for many years. Amidst the backdrop of military aircraft flying over Rostov-on-Don and military trucks traversing the region's roads, the circus stands as a unified entity. Each worker, with their unique history and perspective on the world, is tightly interconnected within this collective. Dair, who adheres to a uniform, anticipates receiving a summons any day now, prepared to head to the front line. However, the uncertainty of the future remains a mystery to all.

The director of the film with three children moves to work in Germany. Lost and disoriented in the alien environment, the children start attending a circus school run by 60-year-old Hanspeter Kurtzhals. This helps them learn German and make friends in Germany. And the story of Hanspeter himself plunges the director into the past and forces him to go in search of circus actress Carmen, from whom only a few photographs of 30 years ago remain. In search of Carmen, who spends the night in a new place every week, cannot read or write, does not have an account in social networks and a permanent phone number, the director traveled 500 kilometers, visited four cities and five federal states of Germany, at a fair, in a stable, in in a beer tent, in a gypsy camp, I heard a dozen incredible stories and drew a large family tree.

In Tsirk, student clown Alexei is our guide to the State School for Circus and Variety Arts, in Moscow. It's a shabby relic of a vast Soviet circus system instituted to entertain the masses and spread propaganda. While Alexei hones his pratfalls, the committed and underpaid staff remember better, but less free, days.

Tsirk was shortlisted for 'Best Newcomer' at Grierson Awards 2010. It was an official selection at the Sheffield International Docfest (2009) and at the London Russian Film Festival, the British Council Film Festival Moscow, and the VGIK International Student Film Festival.

Animal tamers from various continents shine in the spotlight and struggle for their existence behind the scenes. Namayca, Carmen, Nadezhda, Aliya, and Anosa are five women from four different countries, but all are charismatic animal tamers. They work in the circus and train tigers, lions, and bears. Between toiling and smiling, the female circus artists disclose their passion for their “wild” animals and extraordinary profession. But the director Anka Schmid illuminates the harsh reality behind the sparkling images and offers a respectful view into the exotic life of these artistic performers. The women speak candidly about their wishes and desires – about their lives between freedom and extreme dependence, between admiration and exclusion. And their profession that may soon be outlawed.

On January 28, 1982, the Moscow bohemia was shocked by the news, the authenticity of which was hard to believe, the head of the Union State Circus, Anatoly Kolevatov, was arrested. After all, he was friends with Shchelokov, the all-powerful Minister of the Interior of the Brezhnev era. And here is the “execution” article, bribery on an especially large scale. Allegedly, the head of the Union State Circus imposed a tribute on all circus artists. He accepted valuable gifts and money from them in exchange for foreign tours. During searches in the apartment and at the dacha of Kolevatov, valuables were seized for an unimaginable amount of two million rubles at that time. To take out all these "material evidence" investigators needed a truck.

Clowning can be called the most complex, synthetic, in a certain sense elitist, circus genre. After all, in order to parody this or that number, pretending to be awkward or inept, it is necessary in fact to professionally master the skills of the parodied circus genre. This determines the versatility, versatility of the skills and talents of the clown. Clown performances accompany the entire circus program, all numbers and attractions. A clown must play almost all instruments, be an excellent acrobat, gymnast, juggler, equilibrist, jockey. He needs to learn riding a motorcycle, ballet, fencing, singing. But, above all, he must master the art of acting expressiveness.
