"Gorbachev. Heaven" is a documentary film about changes that reverberated throughout the world wrought by one man. A film summing-up the life of a man who changed the world in the 20th century. Gorbachev’s short time in power was marked by the collapse of this empire. He was the architect of Glasnost and Perestroika, policies that gave the citizens of the Soviet Union – what Ronald Reagan called “the Evil Empire” – a chance to be free. He tore down the Berlin Wall. But at the same time, under his rule, the Chernobyl nuclear facility exploded and its destruction was concealed. Citizens demanding independence in the Baltic states died. Soldiers wielding shovels brutally suppressed protesters in Tbilisi. And Soviet tanks menaced, and killed, peaceful demonstrators in Baku. The Soviet empire collapsed under him – and he is condemned by his own people. With this burden of the past, this lonely old man is living the last days of his life in an empty house in the suburbs near Moscow.

The exchange of old Soviet passports for new Russian passports is a milestone in the life of the country. A provincial travel photographer wanders around remote Siberian villages and takes pictures of their inhabitants for new passports. But sometimes they will invite you to film the wedding. And somewhere you can buy a piglet. Following the village photographer and carefully observing everyday rural life, the filmmakers create a kind of poetic canvas that tells about the worldview of people living in the Russian outback at the junction of two cultures, Soviet and modern. The film won an award at the Russia Open Documentary Film Festival in Yekaterinburg.

Here 700 garage box owners form an extraordinary men’s club and vary from those who just keep their cars to those who adapt their boxes for living. The complex is a unique biosphere with the existence of private saunas, a restaurant, an animal clinic and other artifacts of life stuck in time 20 years back.

Oleg Mavromatti's film is an absolutely new genre of audiovisual work. It is made entirely from Internet footage, but at the same time it has a very bright, very individual rhythm, peculiar only to Oleg, and a way of organizing the artistic fabric. The protagonist is a real person who tries to find himself in a virtual environment by publishing his video diaries. We see how his consciousness dissolves in the media space, in which there is no death, which means there is no life. This existential drama about human loneliness makes the viewer look inward and see the abyss of media propaganda. The tape was awarded as the Best Documentary at the National Film Festival of Debuts "Movement" -2015.

Sukhum is the capital of Abkhazia, a tiny, unrecognized republic on the shores of the Black Sea. On its highest hill lies a medical institute of research on monkeys, established by the Soviets in the 1920’s. The legend states it was meant to create a hybrid between man and ape. This creature never came to life, neither the communist New Man did. Today, men and monkeys are caged in a territory ravaged by war and decades of cruelty, both victims of a failed series of experiments.

Lolita has inherited two cultures, as her mother is Russian and her father is Azerbaijani. A lyrical and breathtaking story about a girl, who goes to Azerbaijan for the very first time to meet her father’s parents. She wants to know as much as she can about traditions, culture and mores of her Azerbaijan relatives. Her first acquaintance with Azerbaijan is the main plot of this documental movie.

An archive photo from 1940 of a murdered woman trying to save her son with her body becomes an inspiration for contemplating over film´s boundaries - geographical as well as metaphorical ones. People on different sides of the Latvian – Russian border sense the import of historical realities in a completely different way. One side associates it with liberation, for the other side it means the loss of freedom. A well-known Latvian author, Davis Simanis, produces an explosive testament about the tension on EU´s eastern borders.

The film is dedicated to the first and last president of the Soviet Union, Nobel laureate Mikhail Gorbachev. The film was shot in Moscow, Berlin and Rome, at a reception with the Pope in the Vatican and in the homeland of Gorbachev in the Stavropol Territory.
