Take an oath to a new country for the second time or leave your native airfield to the north, leave your apartments and even your family? But what if the plane of the former Soviet republic is in the sight? How to fight against former fellow soldiers? The recent tragic events and air raids in the Donbass, as well as the annexation of Crimea to Russia, again forced the pilots to think about these issues. The film received the Grand Prix at the Open Documentary Film Festival "Russia" - 2016.

In 2001, near Pskov, at an air show, a disaster occurred in front of 10,000 spectators. The crash of the plane, which was controlled by Timur Apakidze, was filmed by dozens of cameras. The film also contains the voice of Apakidze himself, who, shortly before his death, as if anticipating it, managed to talk about how the pilot feels in an emergency flight, being on the verge of life and death. And how painful is the choice between ejection-life and the desire to save the plane.

Roberto Bartini is a "man of mystery". Who was this Italian? Aircraft designer or mathematician, writer or artist? Or maybe, as some quite seriously claim, he was an alien? But whoever he really is, almost all historians agree that Roberto Bartini is a genius from the galaxy of Leonardo Da Vinci, Giordano Bruno and Galileo, great scientists born on the Apennine Peninsula. Having left his homeland in 1923 and, by the will of fate, finding himself in the Soviet Union, Bartini fully tasted all the joys and sorrows of life in the USSR. Before leaving Italy, he swore an oath to his comrades in the Italian Communist Party to dedicate his life to making red planes fly faster than black ones. Roberto Bartini remained faithful to this oath to the end.

The Northerners is a cycle of film essays with a focus on Northern individualism. Each one of the three parts plays out in different places around the Kola Peninsula over one day. The story evolves around the everyday life of three people that share no formal ties. Igor, who belongs to a dynasty of pilots, is a polar aviation squad commander; Vassily is a Murmansk merchant port tug master; Volodya is a woodcutter, leader of a wood harvesting guild. As most of those living in the North, they came here for work, and though they weren’t initially planning on staying on, they ended up staying forever. They share this peculiar perception of reality, a special rhythm of life and the way they see themselves and others. They have taught themselves not to fear to surrender their lives to natural cycles, to be proactive, to count on no one but themselves yet to always help everyone, even strangers, not to make plans and not to get down.

“The Shine and Poverty of Kirill Filippov,” this is how the mother of a young aviator who builds an airplane at home in the kitchen would call this film.

The investigation revealed the legendary director of an aircraft factory Matvey Shenkman crashed here during World War II. He launched into production the most mass-produced military aircraft in history. Stalin threatened him and agreed with him. Denunciations to KGB demanded him to be shot. All the newspapers in the country wrote about his death. But over time, his name was forgotten, and the path to the grave was lost. And only 75 years later, the authors of the film found his grave in Russia - and another one, in San Francisco, USA. Is also engraved the name of Matvey Shenkman on it. And his bust, made by Stalin’s personal order, stands now in a California house.

The legendary attack aircraft of the times of the Great Patriotic Il-2 can be called the weapon of Victory without exaggeration. In the spring of this year, a search expedition went to the Kerch Strait to raise Soviet aircraft lost during the battles for the Crimea. The main task was to establish the names of the dead pilots. However, it immediately became clear that the sea did not intend to part with attack aircraft, which had lain under water for more than seventy years, without a fight.

But Tanya was only interested in one question, could she fly again?

Few people know, but for the first time Soviet aviation launched airstrikes on Berlin back in August 1941, just 6 weeks after the start of World War II. This picture is about the feat of Soviet military pilots and about the price that had to be paid for a radio message to reach the headquarters “My location is Berlin. Mission accomplished, let's go home".

Everyone considered him missing when, on June 26, 1941, he did not return from a sortie. However, 10 years later, his personal belongings were found. But the story didn't end there. In order for the country to recognize the name of Alexander Maslov from Kolomna, 55 years had to pass, only in 1996 Maslov received the well-deserved title of Hero of Russia posthumously. The story of the feat and the difficult path to the recognition of the hero as a Hero is told by the major of the Russian Air Force, writer Eduard Kharitonov.

The Museum of Aviation employs volunteers who are on fire with aircraft and the sky. They have been coming to the museum every Saturday for many years to reconstruct, clean and maintain old planes. They are recreating what was destroyed in order to preserve the history of domestic aviation. From conversations with museum volunteers in Monino, this documentary was born.
