There are not many places left in the world of extraordinary beauty and power, and at the same time without tourist crowds. The village of Melukote in the Indian state of Karnataka is an ancient multi-tiered cosmos of times and spaces. It has only one street and a huge number of temples from megalithic and cave to large thousand-year-old with a powerful monastic community. This is one of the main centers of Vaishnavism. Here in the 11th-12th century lived the great philosopher and reformer St. Ramanuja. The Academy of Sanskrit with a marvelous library is also located here.
