Film follows different age present-day Estonian Russians who are facing difficulties with their identities. 14 CASES is a feature documentary film targeted for international audience taking a fresh look at the present-day Russians living in Estonia. It is a character driven story and it focuses on personal stories of born in Estonia young people who are the descendants of migrants from the Soviet era, representing almost the third generation. Although they lived their whole life surrounded by Estonian national symbols and colours, lifestyle and cuisine, they still speak Russian as their mother tongue, got secondary education in Russian language, listen and watch Russian radio and television, and gravitate towards Russian culture. They feel belonging to the history of Russia and Russian consciousness. But Baltic Russian is not something solid and single. Many Baltics Russians associate themselves with the Russian nationality, while at the same time they are Estonian citizens. Some of them face an identity crisis: a conflict of national identity with civil identity. But most of Baltic Russians feel an awareness of difference, the recognition of being not fully integrated into the society. A lot of Russian high school graduates leave country to study abroad and never return. At the same time there are also those who feel obsessed with languages and mislead by pro-Russia politics but love and prefer to live in Estonia. Almost for four years the film crew followed several Russian-speaking families in a decision-making period. All of them were facing the difficult task – to determine their own or their kids future. According to the age the choices differed. For the parents of five-year-olds – it is not an easy choice of kindergarten, either Estonian or Russian. For the family whose 12-year old son suddenly decides to change the school to Estonian – the question of his established identity which doesn’t well match with boy’s new schoolmates’; for the high-school graduates, the question either to stay or to leave Estonia.

The film is about priests who came to God in different ways and, in addition to service, are engaged in creativity and science. The film is about how and through what trials the protagonists found the Almighty and realized that He was involved in the fate of each of them. On the example of the ministers of the church, it is shown that the gates to the Faith must be sought in oneself daily and hourly. Only through agreement with conscience can one come to the Lord in order to live in peace and harmony with oneself and with the world around.

In late 2011 – early 2012 Moscow witnessed mass protest events involving tens of thousands of people. The people’s discontent with the policy of authorities, with their irremovability from office, with manipulated elections and corruption, resulted in numerous rallies, actions and face-offs with police. The first part of the film is a research-chronicle of the collective protest body, of its movements in the city milieu, of typical situations arising between its participants and with the representatives of authorities. The return of politics to the streets of Russian cities marked the change in the existing contract between the authorities and the society. One of the most popular slogans of that time was: “You do not even imagine us.” Five years later, several activists tell the story how the participation in these events changed their lives. The protagonists include a defendant in the Bolotnaya case, the most massive political case of the last years, a female LGBT activist and a socialist historian.

The film "Recovering Memory" is aimed at drawing attention to the problem of Stalinist repressions. The problem of memory and attitude to repression still divides society into two parts. On the one hand, there is condemnation and moral rejection of mass terror and totalitarian dictatorship; on the other hand, there is admiration for the scale of transformations and justification of the illegal persecution and destruction of people that took place at that time. This art project is a kind of video story and at the same time a visualization of an art installation proposed by the artist Nikolai Nasedkin. According to the plan, a symbolic raft with lighted funeral candles passes along the Moskva River. Similar rafts were used to transport logs cut by prisoners. Carrying out this art action in reality on the Moskva River can become a sign of reconciliation and memory, a reminder of the tragic past that should not be repeated.

For several years, Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich investigated Russian people’s relationship of love. Which, she means, is an acute shortage of today’s society. Documentary film director Staffan Julén followed her work and together they depict a process driven by equal parts of political, artistic and humanistic forces.” The film is an intricate tapestry of interwoven stories that express the essence of love, the byzantine paths it can take, and its power to survive, even in the most desperate circumstances. But it also sings of madness, pain, longing and emptiness in a harsh reality that values people by status and money.
