In 1945, after the capture of Königsberg, Soviet citizens began moving into the city and settling in the surviving German houses. As a result, former enemies found themselves living under the same roof. One might have expected conflict—but life had other plans. German and Soviet children became friends, while their mothers worked together to build a new postwar life.
