Far beyond the Arctic Circle, Taimyr froze in the snow. The northernmost peninsula of Russia, where the ancient shamans, the ancestors of the Nganasans, found their home. The Nganasans have always been a small people. In the 19th century, only about a thousand people called themselves Nganasans, and this figure did not change for many years. But over the past 30 years, their number has decreased by a third.
