Discovered in 1596 by Willem Barents, the Svalbard archipelago, which appeared on Russian maps almost at the same time under the name "Holy Russian Islands", was assigned to Norway in 1920. At the same time, 46 states under the agreement have the right to carry out commercial and research activities there, but at the moment only Russia enjoys this privilege. The Russians even have a settlement on the island, the village of Barenburg, called by tourists the "Island of Communism". It is inhabited by shift workers who come here to work.
