Deaf Russian province. A young guy, Ilya, studies at a boring college as an English teacher. From dullness and melancholy, he manages to escape with the help of a game of chess. Ilya shares the magical world of chess with Tatar village children, to whom he is sent to work as a teacher. For some time, the chessboard becomes for Ilya and the children an alternative to real life.
