Summer 1915. The Russian army retreats from the western provinces of the empire, leaving burnt land to the advancing Germans. The tsarist authorities evicted peasant families, some of them run away on their own, whole villages are on fire. Hundreds of thousands of carts are drawn to the east. Those who endured the nightmarish journey reached the Don, Siberia, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
