The Northerners is a cycle of film essays with a focus on Northern individualism. Each one of the three parts plays out in different places around the Kola Peninsula over one day. The story evolves around the everyday life of three people that share no formal ties. Igor, who belongs to a dynasty of pilots, is a polar aviation squad commander; Vassily is a Murmansk merchant port tug master; Volodya is a woodcutter, leader of a wood harvesting guild. As most of those living in the North, they came here for work, and though they weren’t initially planning on staying on, they ended up staying forever. They share this peculiar perception of reality, a special rhythm of life and the way they see themselves and others. They have taught themselves not to fear to surrender their lives to natural cycles, to be proactive, to count on no one but themselves yet to always help everyone, even strangers, not to make plans and not to get down.

Suburban guy, just out of his teenage years, is trying to find his identity though processing divorce of his parents that happened when he was a kid. He immerses himself in memories of the past, fantasies of what could have been and open talks with his mom and dad. He grows to find the strength to heal and forgive.

Why was classical music so important to Nazis? An insight into that is provided by the stories of a Jewish cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch who survived Auschwitz and of a star conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler who worked with the Nazis. The film centers around two people who represent musical culture during the Third Reich. Wilhelm Furtwängler was a star conductor, whereas Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was a cellist of the infamous Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. The conductor made a pact with Hitler and his henchmen. The young woman, brought to Auschwitz for being Jewish, was spared death for her musical talent.

The film story includes two intertwined parallel realities. The first one is a rehearsal of the play “The Little Prince” by Saint-Exupéry carried out by the actor and director Alexander Zhdanovich together with the actors — children from the boarding home for children with special needs. The second reality consists of different areas of life in which the characters reveal their inner world and state of mind at that moment. Loneliness, love, inability to love, confusion, compassion, joy. As if the little prince lives in each of the characters...

In March 2012, political activist Daniil Konstantinov was detained and charged with domestic murder. He pleaded not guilty, claimed that at the time of the murder he was on the other side of Moscow and that the criminal case against him was fabricated. During the trial, Konstantinov's alibi was fully confirmed. Daniel's defenders provided a lot of evidence of his non-involvement in the crime. The film tells about the trial and consists almost entirely of footage shot in the courtroom.

A Nanai man living in difficult conditions in a remote village on the banks of the Amur River must support his small family by fishing. He, his wife and child have been living for many years according to the long-established way of life in these places. There are few residents left in this remote village and there are no prospects for settlement. Recently, by the decision of the authorities, fishing in these places has become controlled, which further complicates the life of the family.
