The story is told against the backdrop of historical events of the mid-13th century, which took place in the vast expanses from Rome to Karakorum. Filming took place in Russia, Mongolia, Italy, the Vatican and the Sovereign Order of Malta. The film was shot in Russian sign language, accompanied by subtitles and voiced by people with hearing impairments.
