The heroes of this story are the inhabitants of the village of Purnema, located on the shores of the White Sea. The events of their lives take place by the rhythm of the sea: the tide comes in, and the tide goes out, and nothing can change this order of things.

Lev is a lonely old man. His wife and only son are long dead. He lives as a recluse in a quiet decaying house on a plot overgrown with tall grass. But one day the peace in Lev's house is disturbed by the arrival of his old acquaintance.
