Almost all the materials of this story were lost, and the director had to do a lot of research work. For the film adaptation, the genre of "documentary film with artistic reconstruction" was chosen, it is it that helps, on the one hand, to fully experience all the events together with the heroes of the film, and on the other hand, not to lose the documentary nature of the story. The film was based on a historical document, the diary of Polina Zhemchuzhina, which she wrote during her exile in Kazakhstan, partially preserved to our time.
