This happened in early 1916 - the Julian Alps in the Slovenian territory were in the very heat of the devastating First World War. Many people were sent to the mountains, mostly Russian prisoners of war.
Once, when building a road in the middle of the mountains, a terrible avalanche occurred, many people died. After the tragedy, the Russian prisoners built a small Orthodox chapel on the Vršić Pass, and it still stands there. In 2006, the dilapidated building was reconstructed with the help of the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia, every year here are held the days of commemoration, remembrance of those killed in the First World War.
