Three former political prisoners (worker Viktor Pestov, convicted of anti-Soviet activities, literary critic Mikhail Meilakh, convicted of possession of literature banned in the USSR (V. Nabokov, O. Mandelstam, A. Solzhenitsyn), human rights activist Sergei Kovalev, convicted for working on the release of the weekly on Rights person in the USSR) recall their stories of arrest and imprisonment in the Perm-36 penitentiary. In 1996, at the initiative of the historian Viktor Shmyrov, a unique museum of the history of political repressions "Perm-36" was opened on the site of this camp. Since 2005, on the last weekend of July, the museum has been hosting the international civil forum "Sawmill" with the aim of educating society: discussions, music concerts, excursions, film screenings are organized. Guests camp in tents on the field in front of the museum, representing various social and political groups, there are democrats, liberals, communists or just tourists. Years later, former dissidents return to the camp, now a museum, to take part in the Pilorama forum, whose tent camp, like a mirror, reflects the state of Russian society, haunted by phantom pains after the collapse of the USSR. Not disdaining provocation, young communists and members of the Essence of Time movement actively protest against the existence of the museum and forum, zealously entering into discussions with former dissidents. Over time, they manage to attract the attention of the public and authorities, which is why clouds are gathering over the museum. The film is dedicated to the main triumph of Russian aviation in the 1930s, the ultra-long transpolar flights made by the crews of Heroes of the Soviet Union Chkalov and Gromov. In unbearable conditions, they conducted a non-stop flight Moscow-North Pole-USA. The story is built on unique documents, the existence of which was not previously known. These are the diaries and manuscripts of pilot Georgy Baidukov, co-pilot of Chkalov's crew, recently found by members of his family. It is they who will shed light on the reliable history of the fate of Soviet heroes. Now these flights are considered the main events of the Soviet aviation of those years.

Nine characters in the film are frank monologues about their profession. Outrageous artist (a woman who paints pictures with her breasts), an extravagant disinfector (a real Mozart of exterminating cockroaches and rats), a film critic (a very narrow specialist), a wedding planner (a very general specialist), an actress-singer (practically Marilyn Monroe), a fashion model (posing without clothes), weapons specialist (Russian Terminator), psychologist (specialist in healing the injuries of the mysterious Russian soul).

Why was classical music so important to Nazis? An insight into that is provided by the stories of a Jewish cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch who survived Auschwitz and of a star conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler who worked with the Nazis. The film centers around two people who represent musical culture during the Third Reich. Wilhelm Furtwängler was a star conductor, whereas Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was a cellist of the infamous Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. The conductor made a pact with Hitler and his henchmen. The young woman, brought to Auschwitz for being Jewish, was spared death for her musical talent.

The film story includes two intertwined parallel realities. The first one is a rehearsal of the play “The Little Prince” by Saint-Exupéry carried out by the actor and director Alexander Zhdanovich together with the actors — children from the boarding home for children with special needs. The second reality consists of different areas of life in which the characters reveal their inner world and state of mind at that moment. Loneliness, love, inability to love, confusion, compassion, joy. As if the little prince lives in each of the characters...

In March 2012, political activist Daniil Konstantinov was detained and charged with domestic murder. He pleaded not guilty, claimed that at the time of the murder he was on the other side of Moscow and that the criminal case against him was fabricated. During the trial, Konstantinov's alibi was fully confirmed. Daniel's defenders provided a lot of evidence of his non-involvement in the crime. The film tells about the trial and consists almost entirely of footage shot in the courtroom.

An archive photo from 1940 of a murdered woman trying to save her son with her body becomes an inspiration for contemplating over film´s boundaries - geographical as well as metaphorical ones. People on different sides of the Latvian – Russian border sense the import of historical realities in a completely different way. One side associates it with liberation, for the other side it means the loss of freedom. A well-known Latvian author, Davis Simanis, produces an explosive testament about the tension on EU´s eastern borders.
